It’s no surprise that our nerves have been a nervous wreck at some point or other since March 2020, the official start of the GP (global pandemic). In a report by the Lancet, Indians reported a 35% increase in anxiety and depression during the pandemic. And in another study by University of Queensland, more women than men and younger people than seniors were affected with these conditions.
Please note: Should you suffer from more prolonged or serious mental health issues, we strongly recommend seeking help from a mental health professional trained in handling health conditions.
However, our recommendation from Team Saltwater for at-home anxiety that you may experience from time to time (anxiety, sleep disorders, among other conditions) – a simple weighted blanket.
Is a weighted blanket just a heavy blanket?
A weighted blanket is a special type of heavy blanket that can provide those who suffer from anxiety with a sense of calm. In reality, weighted blankets are much heavier than normal blankets. What makes them really unique is what they are made of - a quilted fabric with built-in ‘pockets’ that are stuffed with a filler material. This stuffing is what is responsible for the ‘extra weight’ these blankets provide you.
So how do weighted blankets work?
It is said that the pressure from the weighted blankets alleviates anxiety by activating your parasympathetic nerves, which essentially decreases your heart rate, thereby lowering your anxiety. Anxiety sufferers comment saying this pressure therapy feels like being swaddled. This weight encourages relaxation, and ultimately sleep, by promoting melatonin (a sleep hormone).
Blankets come in varying weights and sizes depending on the person’s needs.
