In the current era of focused, purpose-driven conversations, where every discussion needs to fulfil an agenda, is there any space for small talk?
We are often, perhaps unjustly, given to believe that small talk is something undesirable and to be avoided. But, as Anna Sale reminds us through her article in the New York Times, it shouldn’t be discarded at all. In fact, she argues that all conversations essentially originated from the practice of small talk.
As we relearn what conversation means for different people, emerging from the pandemic, small talk may have unexpected lessons for us. It isn’t always about polite but inconsequential chit-chat. Instead, as communications expert Rob Kendall points out, small talk is “a way in to making connection.” The light-hearted nature of chit-chats allows you to destress, relax and freely unload yourself.
