Welcome back to the office! You probably are (or are about to start) visiting your place of work a few times a week – and are either loving or hating it. But for many, the last two years have not been so much a question of WFH vs WFO but about work itself – should you keep doing what you’ve been doing, or has another field or industry piqued your interest?
With many new industries emerging in recent times – from mental health to the metaverse – your options are aplenty. And if switching gears is what you’ve decided to do, fret not. We come with tips.
First, don’t stress. While changing careers can make you feel uncertain or anxious, it is also an exciting time to explore and learn about things you may not have previously. Seek out and speak to experts from fields you’re interested in – either from your own network, or through LinkedIn – to get an insight into what the industry realistically involves, and if that is what you want to do (like when you thought pursuing English literature was all about the stories… till it wasn’t).
And second, think: transferability. What are the skills you can bring to the new industry (such as professional or people, if not technical), and what are the gaps that remain? This will not only give you the ‘why’ but also the ‘how’ when making the shift – and nothing gives confidence like a well-researched plan!
