State Of Flow

Recuperating from being made redundant can be hard, but it is possible

From our social circles to our virtual spaces, we’re inundated with advice on how to manage insecurities and rejections, especially in familial or romantic relationships. But, how do you manage your insecurities and rejections at work? That too when you’re trying to start afresh after being fired or laid off? Thankfully, there are some simple tricks that can help.

The first thing to do is to be okay with how you feel. There’s actually a term for struggling to cope with negative, abusive, or traumatic aspects of your job. Psychotherapist Joyce Marter calls it corporate or workplace PTSD. And losing your job can certainly be categorised as such.

Once you’ve identified your feelings, work towards recognizing your potential and worth. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we’re just not cut out for a certain role or environment. And that’s okay. Focussing on what you enjoy, what you’re good at, and your successes can help you shift the narrative.

Lastly, identifying your anxieties can go a long way. If every meeting or conversation leaves you waiting for the other shoe to drop, use some of the methods that can help ease them. You can also consider getting help.

Your career, much like most things in our life, is a journey. Perhaps viewing it as such can help us lean in and learn a thing or two along the way.
