Did you know that Bhutan had its first Oscar-nominated film this year? And that you can watch the film at home? We’re talking about Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom (2019), which was nominated in the Best International Feature category for 2022.
The film traces the year-long transformative journey of a young Bhutanese teacher, Ugyen Dorji as he relocates to the village of Lunana, a remote community of nomadic yak herders. At the dizzying altitude of more than 11,000 feet, the place is less-than-idyllic for him. You see, he wants to move to Australia to pursue his music career. But, albeit reluctantly, he accepts the position. And everything changes. The long journey and the students all have an impact on him, and he, on them.
What happens next? You’ll have to watch the film to find out.
You can watch Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom on Amazon Prime.
